EDITORS COMMENTS
This cartoon from 1883, titled "Cartoon: Tailoring for Actors - J.L. Toole," offers a satirical take on the meticulous tailoring required for actors during the Victorian era. The image features two men engrossed in the intricacies of creating the perfect costume, with one man, bearing a striking resemblance to the renowned actor John Lawrence Toole (1830-1906), examining a fabric swatch. The cartoon alludes to the prevalent adaptation of French plays for the English theatre during this period. One such production was "Stage Dora, or, Who Killed Cock Robin," which was adapted by F.C. Burnand from Sardou's play, "Fedora," then in production at Toole's Theatre in London. The men in the cartoon are shown carefully selecting materials for their costumes, with an array of fabrics and textiles spread out before them. The attention to detail and the importance of the right material for the right role are emphasized through the satirical lens of the cartoonist. The man on the left, resembling J.L. Toole, dons a monocle, adding an air of sophistication and importance to the scene. The overall tone of the cartoon is lighthearted and playful, poking fun at the behind-the-scenes world of theatre and the importance of a well-made costume in bringing a character to life. This cartoon is a fascinating glimpse into the world of Victorian theatre and the meticulous process of creating costumes for actors. It is a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship that went into every production, ensuring that the actors were dressed to impress and deliver an unforgettable performance.
