EDITORS COMMENTS
Catalhoyuk: A Glimpse into the Neolithic and Chalcolithic Proto-City Settlement of Southern Anatolia This photograph showcases two significant discoveries from the archaeological site of Catalhoyuk, also known as Catal Hoyuk and Catal Huyuk, located in southern Anatolia, Turkey. The site, which existed from approximately 7100 BC to 5700 BC, is renowned for its large Neolithic and Chalcolithic settlement, featuring numerous structures built with mud bricks. The top image reveals Level XII and the Shrine of Level VIII. Level XII, the oldest known level, is famous for its well-preserved buildings, while Level VIII is distinguished by its elaborate shrines. The shrine in this photograph is particularly spectacular, with intricate wall paintings depicting various scenes, including a possible fertility goddess. The bottom image displays the north wall of Level V, featuring a dramatic painting showing Neolithic hunters attacking an aurochs. This stunning depiction, discovered by renowned archaeologist James Mellaart, provides valuable insights into the daily life and hunting practices of the people who inhabited Catalhoyuk during the 8th, 7th, and 6th millennia BC. Mellaart, a Lecturer in Anatolian Archaeology at the University of London, made these discoveries during the 1960s and shared his findings in an article published in 1966. The photograph offers a glimpse into the rich prehistory of this fascinating archaeological site, which continues to captivate scholars and enthusiasts alike.
