EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Cecil Calvert, First Lord Baltimore (1606-1675): A Colonial Entrepreneur and Proprietor of Maryland" Cecil Calvert, the enigmatic first Lord Baltimore, is depicted in this striking 17th-century portrait. Born in 1606, Calvert was the eldest son of George Calvert, 1st Baron Baltimore, who had been granted a royal charter to establish the Province of Maryland in 1632. Although Cecil never set foot in the New World, his influence on the colony was profound. The year 1657 marked a significant moment in Calvert's life, as he succeeded his father as the 2nd Baron Baltimore and became the proprietor of Maryland. This title granted him the authority to govern the colony and shape its future. Despite his absence, Calvert took an active interest in Maryland's development, sending regular instructions to his appointed governors and advocating for religious tolerance. Calvert's vision for Maryland was unique among English colonies, as he sought to create a haven for Catholics seeking refuge from religious persecution in England. This policy, known as the "Maryland Toleration Act," attracted a diverse population to the colony, including not only Catholics but also Protestants and other religious groups. Calvert's entrepreneurial spirit extended beyond Maryland, as he was also involved in various business ventures in England. He served as a Member of Parliament and held several important positions within the English government. However, it was his role as the proprietor of Maryland that would leave a lasting legacy. This portrait captures the essence of a man who, despite never visiting the land he governed, played a crucial role in shaping the history of Maryland and the lives of its early settlers. His commitment to religious freedom and his entrepreneurial spirit continue to be celebrated as defining characteristics of the colony he founded.
