EDITORS COMMENTS
Cedarmere: The Home of William Cullen Bryant in Roslyn, Long Island, USA - Circa 1878 Nestled among the picturesque landscapes of Roslyn, Long Island, New York, lies the historic home of renowned American poet, William Cullen Bryant. Known as "Cedarmere," this charming residence, built in 1810, served as Bryant's refuge and inspiration for over five decades. The serene image captures the essence of Cedarmere, with its red-brick façade, lush gardens, and the tranquil waters of the duck pond reflecting the beauty of the surrounding landscape. Bryant, a leading figure in American literature during the Romantic era, penned some of his most famous works at this idyllic location. Born in 1794 in Cummington, Massachusetts, Bryant moved to New York City in 1815 to pursue a career in journalism. He eventually became the editor of the New-York Evening Post, where he gained recognition for his poetic talents. In 1821, Bryant purchased Cedarmere and spent the remainder of his life there, writing, gardening, and enjoying the natural beauty of Long Island. The poet's connection to Cedarmere went beyond just being a homeowner. The property's natural splendor served as a muse for many of his works, including "Thanatopsis," one of his most famous poems, which begins with the lines, "To live in the heart of nature is to be outside the narrowing circle of human cares." Today, Cedarmere stands as a testament to Bryant's enduring legacy and the rich history of American literature. The house and its grounds are now maintained by the Cullen Bryant Homestead Association and are open to the public for tours, allowing visitors to explore the very place that inspired one of America's most beloved poets.
