EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving, titled "The Cervara Party in Rome," is a delightful parody of Miguel de Cervantes' iconic character Don Quixote, from the seminal work "Don Quixote de la Mancha" (1605). The image, created in the late 19th century, is a collaboration between Spanish artists Hermenegildo Estevan and Capuz. Don Quixote, the noble and errant hidalgo from La Mancha, is famously known for his chivalric pursuits and his encounters with various knights and characters. In this illustration, we see a lively gathering of Spanish artists in Rome, who have taken inspiration from Don Quixote's adventures to create a humorous scene. At the center of the image, we find Don Quixote himself, astride his faithful horse, Rosinante. He is engaged in an encounter with the Knight of the Mirrors, a character from Chapter XXI of the second part of "Don Quixote." In the original tale, the Knight of the Mirrors reflects Don Quixote's image back at him, causing the knight-errant to believe he is facing a formidable foe. In this rendition, the artists of the Cervara party have recreated the scene with a contemporary twist, adding vibrant colors and a touch of whimsy. The engraving is a testament to the enduring appeal of Cervantes' literary masterpiece and the creativity of the artists who continue to be inspired by it. This beautiful and intricately detailed print, created by Hermenegildo Estevan and Capuz in 1890, is a must-have for any collection focusing on Spanish literature, art history, or the 16th and 17th centuries. It is a delightful reminder of the power of literature to inspire and entertain, and the enduring appeal of the knight-errant Don Quixote.
