EDITORS COMMENTS
This painting by Neave Parker brings to life the enigmatic Cetiosaurus, a sauropod dinosaur that once roamed the Midlands and Southern England during the Upper Jurassic period, approximately 160 to 170 million years ago. The Cetiosaurus, a member of the Cetiosauridae family, is estimated to have grown up to an impressive 60 feet in length. The habitat depicted in this artwork is a serene, prehistoric landscape, with lush vegetation and a calm body of water in the background. Contrary to popular belief, Cetiosaurus was not an aquatic dinosaur, but rather a herbivorous land dweller. Its elongated neck and tail, small head, and columnar legs are characteristic features of sauropods. The Cetiosaurus belongs to the larger group of archosauromorphs, which includes both dinosaurs and their more ancient relatives. More specifically, it is classified as a diapsid, a subgroup of diapsids characterized by a pair of openings in the skull for the cheekbones. The Cetiosaurus is also an eutherian, meaning it had a metabolism that kept its body temperature relatively constant, and an archosaur, a reptile with a bipedal or quadrupedal posture and a body covered in scales. This stunning artwork, created in the early 20th century, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when dinosaurs ruled the earth. The daytime scene, bathed in sunlight, highlights the intricate details of the Cetiosaurus's body and adds to the overall sense of wonder and discovery. As we admire this painting, we are reminded of the rich history of the natural world and the importance of preserving and studying the fossil records that help us understand the evolution of life on Earth.
