EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the bravery and heroism of the Chasseurs Alpins, the famous French mountain riflemen, during the First World War. In this scene, taken in 1915, around forty Chasseurs Alpins are shown charging down the snow-covered slopes of Hermannsweiler Kopf in Alsace, with their bayonets fixed and skis in hand. The men, led by their officer, had been hiding among a forest of fir trees when the hill was suddenly surrounded by the enemy. With no other option but to fight, they dashed down the hill in a daring and desperate attempt to reach the enemy lines. Tragically, despite their valiant efforts, the Chasseurs Alpins were outnumbered and after a fierce hand-to-hand fight, all were killed. This poignant image serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by these brave soldiers during the First World War. The Chasseurs Alpins, or Alpine Chasseurs, were renowned for their skill in mountain warfare and their ability to move quickly and quietly through the rugged terrain of the Alps. Their tragic fate at Hermannsweiler Kopf is just one of many stories of heroism and sacrifice from this pivotal period in world history.
