1834 1867 Browne Farrar Humorist Plume Ward

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the enigmatic and witty Charles Farrar Browne, better known by his pen name Arthurs Ward, in the prime of his literary career. Born on February 3, 1834, in Hamilton, Massachusetts, Browne would go on to become one of the most beloved American humorists of the 19th century. Arthur Ward's writing was marked by its clever satire and biting wit, often poking fun at the social norms and conventions of his time. He began his career as a writer for various publications, including the New York Times and the New York Tribune, before publishing his first collection of humorous essays, "Fancy Sketches," in 1855. Despite his success, Browne's life was not without tragedy. In 1861, his wife, Mary, died by suicide, leaving him to raise their five children on his own. This personal loss is believed to have influenced the melancholic tone of his later works. Browne's popularity continued to grow, and he went on to publish several more collections of essays and stories, including "My Summer in a Garden," "The Old Judge's Sketches," and "The Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow." He was also a frequent contributor to popular magazines such as Harper's Weekly and The Atlantic Monthly. Tragically, Browne's life was cut short when he died by suicide on February 15, 1867, at the age of just 33. His legacy, however, lived on, and his works continue to be celebrated for their insightful commentary on American society and their enduring humor. This photograph of Charles Farrar Browne, taken during his productive and influential career, offers a glimpse into the life of a man whose wit and satire continue to entertain and inspire readers more than a century after his death.
