EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures Charles I, also known as Charles of Anjou or Charles D'Anjou, in a moment of deep contemplation as he sits upon his ornate throne. Born in 1226 in the County of Provence, Charles was the younger brother of King Louis IX of France and went on to rule the Kingdom of Sicily from 1266 to 1285 and the Kingdom of Naples from 1266 to 1285. Charles' reign was marked by significant military conquests and political maneuvering. In 1266, he led a Crusade to retake Sicily from the Hohenstaufen dynasty, and in 1282, he intervened in the Sicilian Vespers, a rebellion against French rule. As a result, he was crowned King of Sicily and later, in 1285, King of Naples. Despite his military and political successes, Charles' reign was not without challenges. He faced opposition from the papacy, the Holy Roman Empire, and the Angevin and Aragonese dynasties. In this portrait, Charles' expression conveys a sense of weariness and introspection, perhaps reflecting the burdens of ruling two kingdoms and navigating the complex political landscape of medieval Europe. Charles is depicted holding the scepter and orb, symbols of his royal authority. The crown on his head, adorned with precious gems and intricate designs, further emphasizes his status as a powerful monarch. The image, created between 1221 and 1285, is a testament to the artistic and historical significance of the Angevin dynasty and the complex political landscape of medieval Europe.
