EDITORS COMMENTS
Charles III of Spain (1716-1788): A Monarch Dedicated to the Pursuit of Hunting and the Expansion of the Spanish Empire In this striking portrait by Francisco de Goya, Charles III of Spain, also known as Charles III of Bourbon, is depicted as a seasoned huntsman, clad in the attire of the 18th century. The King, who ruled Spain and its colonies, including the Spanish Indies, from 1759 until his death in 1788, is shown with a shotgun in hand and a dog by his side. The painting, created between 1786 and 1788, is now housed in the Museum of Pardo in Madrid, Spain. Charles III's love for hunting was well-known, and this passion was not only a personal pleasure but also a symbol of his power and authority. The monarch, who ascended to the throne at the age of 18, was determined to modernize the Spanish monarchy and expand its territories. He was a prolific ruler, who oversaw significant reforms in various areas, including the military, education, and the economy. The King's connection to the Dukes of Parma and Piacenza is evident in the painting. The Dukes were prominent figures in the Spanish court and were known for their hunting prowess. Charles III's close relationship with them is reflected in his adoption of their hunting style and the inclusion of a dog, which may have belonged to one of the Dukes, in the portrait. This portrait of Charles III, with its intricate details and vivid colors, offers a glimpse into the life of a monarch who ruled during a pivotal period in European history. The painting also serves as a reminder of the significant role hunting played in the lives of the European elite and the symbolic importance of the hunt in the representation of power and authority.
