EDITORS COMMENTS

This colored engraving portrays His Majesty King Charles XV of Sweden and Norway (1826-1872), who reigned from 1859 until his untimely death in 1872. Born as Prince Carl of Sweden and Duke of Västergötland, he was a member of the House of Bernadotte. In this portrait, King Charles XV is depicted in the prime of his life, with a well-groomed beard, a smart bow tie, and a regal expression. He wears the insignia of the Order of the Seraphim, the highest order of chivalry in Sweden, and the Star of the Order of St. Olav, the highest decoration in Norway. The king is shown in a grand setting, possibly in the Royal Palace of Stockholm or the Royal Palace of Oslo. Charles XV ascended to the throne following the death of his brother, King Oscar I. During his reign, he focused on modernizing the Swedish military and improving the country's infrastructure. He also worked to strengthen the union between Sweden and Norway, which had been in a personal union since 1814. In 1864, he oversaw the construction of the Drottningholm Palace Theatre, which is still in use today as the Royal Dramatic Theatre. Despite his efforts to modernize Sweden and Norway, King Charles XV faced numerous challenges during his reign, including economic instability and political unrest. He died suddenly in 1872, leaving behind a legacy as a dedicated and progressive monarch. This beautiful colored engraving serves as a testament to his reign and the esteem in which he was held by his people.
