Cigarette - A Child of the Army,

EDITORS COMMENTS
a captivating image by Barry Montour, showcases a resilient female soldier taking a well-deserved moment of reprieve amidst the chaos of the battlefield. The hauntingly beautiful melody and lyrics of this scene originate from the romantic opera of the same name, composed by Haydn Parry with words by E. Warham St. Leger. First performed at the Theatre Royal in Cardiff on August 15, 1892, and later at the Lyric Theatre in London on September 7, 1892, this opera tells a heart-wrenching tale of two feuding French noble families. The title character, Cigarette, shares a name and a similar fate with the heroine of Jules Verne's novel "Under Two Flags." Like her, Cigarette is a vivandière, a female soldier who not only loves the hero but also supports him, ultimately losing him to the harsh realities of war. In this poignant moment, Cigarette takes a break from her duties, her uniform adorned with the insignia of the Theatre Royal and Comic Opera. The smoldering cigarette at her feet serves as a reminder of the intensity and passion that drives her, even in the midst of conflict. The image, created by Barry Montour, captures the essence of the opera's themes of love, loss, and courage in the face of adversity. The saluting soldier, with her determined expression and strong posture, embodies the spirit of Cigarette and the many women who have served and continue to serve in the military. This powerful image, with its rich history and emotional depth, continues to resonate with audiences today.
