EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-coloured aquatint print showcases the American Dipper, Cinclus mexicanus, in its natural habitat by the edge of a crystal-clear mountain stream. Plate 370 from John James Audubon's iconic work, "Birds of America," was engraved, printed, and hand-coloured by R. Havell (& Son) in London between 1835 and 1838. The American Dipper, a passerine bird belonging to the family Cinclidae, is a unique species that is well adapted to living in and around water. The American Dipper is depicted in this image with its distinctive posture, perched on a rock in the stream, balanced precariously with its tail in the water. Its vibrant plumage, with its black and white markings, provides excellent camouflage among the rocks and boulders of the streambed. The bird's long, pointed bill and webbed feet are also clearly visible, making it evident that it is a skilled diver and swimmer. Audubon's meticulous attention to detail is evident in this exquisite print, which captures the American Dipper in its daytime habitat. The intricate engraving and delicate hand-colouring bring the bird to life, making it seem as if it could leap from the page at any moment. The surrounding landscape, with its lush vegetation and rocky terrain, further enhances the sense of realism and immersion into the natural world. As a sauropsid, the American Dipper is part of the larger group of reptile-descended vertebrates, which includes birds and reptiles. Its ability to thrive in aquatic environments is a testament to the incredible diversity and adaptability of the avian world. This beautiful print serves as a reminder of the beauty and wonder of the natural world and the importance of preserving it for future generations.
