EDITORS COMMENTS
This image showcases British actor Jack Hulbert in the role of The Cinema Star, taken from the German operetta "Die Elfte Muse" (The Eleventh Muse) produced at the Deutsches Operetten theatre in Hamburg on 23rd November 1912. The operetta, with music by Jean Gilbert, was later brought to the Shaftesbury Theatre in London on 4th June 1914. In this photograph, Hulbert exudes charisma and allure as he raises one arm, holding a cane, while the other arm is adorned with a cluster of stars. Dressed in a green dress, cloak, and cape, the womanly figure of Hulbert is accentuated by the elegant hat perched atop his head. The image, created by the artist E.P. Kinsella (Edward Patrick), captures the essence of the cinema star, a man whose magnetic presence and talent drew audiences to the movies. The music of Jean Gilbert, a prolific German composer, added to the allure of the production, making it a must-see event for theatre-goers in both Germany and England. This photograph is a testament to the power of performance and the enduring appeal of the silver screen.
