EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 14 of Margaret Bushby Lascelles Cockburn's "Neilgherry Birds and Miscellaneous" (1858) features a stunning watercolor illustration of the Purple Sunbird, Cinnyris asiaticus (Plate 14, Figure 1), in the act of feeding on the nectar of a honeysuckle flower. The sunbird, a small, slender bird belonging to the family Nectariniidae and the order Passeriformes, is depicted with its curved, decurved bill, a distinctive feature of this avian species. The bird's cream-colored belly and vibrant purple plumage contrast beautifully with the delicate, white petals of the honeysuckle flower, a member of the Caprifoliaceae family, which is also known as Lonicera. The sunbird is shown perched on the flower, its long, pointed wings folded behind it, and its tail feathers spread out. The sunbird's diet consists mainly of nectar, which it extracts from flowers using its long, curved bill. This illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of the Purple Sunbird and its interactions with the flowering plant, Lonicera, during the 19th century. The Purple Sunbird is an eudicot, which is a type of angiosperm that has two embryonic seed leaves. It is also an asterid, which is a large clade of angiosperms that includes a wide variety of flowering plants. The sunbird is classified under the class Magnoliophyta, which includes all flowering plants, and the order Dipsacales, which includes honeysuckles and other related plants. This exquisite watercolor illustration, created by Margaret Bushby Lascelles Cockburn in 1858, offers a captivating glimpse into the natural world of the 19th century and the intricate relationships between different species of animals and flowering plants.
