EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting illustration, titled "City of Atlanta, Ga. no. 1," depicts the aftermath of the devastating fire that engulfed Atlanta, Georgia in 1864 during General William T. Sherman's March to the Sea during the American Civil War. The print, created in 1866, shows the ruins of the Atlanta Roundhouse, once a bustling hub of railroad activity. The collapsed stone walls stand in stark contrast to the steam engines and train cars still in place, a poignant reminder of the sudden and complete destruction that had befallen the city. Atlanta, a major railroad center and industrial hub, was a strategic target for Union forces during the war. On November 15, 1864, General Sherman's troops set fire to the city, destroying over 1,600 buildings and leaving thousands of residents homeless. The fire was intended to deny the Confederacy the use of the city's railroads and resources, and to demoralize the Southern population. The image captures the sense of loss and despair that must have pervaded Atlanta in the aftermath of the fire. The ruins of the Roundhouse, with its shattered walls and scattered debris, serve as a symbol of the destruction wrought by the war. Yet, amidst the devastation, there is a sense of resilience and determination. The steam engines and train cars, though damaged, remain in place, waiting to be repaired and put back into service. This illustration serves as a powerful reminder of the indomitable spirit of a city and its people, who would go on to rebuild and recover from the devastation of war.
