EDITORS COMMENTS
Civitatis Orbis Terrarum," or "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum," created by George Braun and Abraham Ortelius in collaboration with Franz Hogenberg, is a seminal work in the history of cartography. Produced between 1572 and 1617, this etching represents one of the most detailed and accurate world maps of its time. The map was created in Ghent, in the Spanish territories of Castile and Leon, specifically for Salamanca University Library. The image captures the essence of a day in the life of the map, with the landscape bathed in the soft, natural light of daytime. The map's rich colors and intricate details are accentuated by the contrast between the sunlit areas and the shadows cast by the relief features. The map's title, "Civitatis Orbis Terrarum," meaning "The Cities of the World," is prominently displayed at the top, while the cartouches at the edges contain various historical and geographical information. The map is a testament to the European obsession with exploration and the desire to document and understand the world. It was a collaborative effort between Braun, Ortelius, and Hogenberg, with Braun serving as the editor, Ortelius as the cartographer, and Hogenberg as the engraver. The map's influence can be seen in the works of later cartographers, such as Ortelius' own "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum," published in 1570, which is considered the first modern atlas. The map's historical significance is further emphasized by its association with Salamanca University Library, one of Europe's oldest and most prestigious academic institutions. The map's presence in the library's collection speaks to the institution's commitment to preserving and disseminating knowledge, making it a valuable resource for scholars and researchers for generations to come.
