EDITORS COMMENTS
Civitatis Orbis Terrarum," or "Theatrum orbis terrarum," also known as "The Map of the World," is a seminal work of cartography created by the German cartographer and geographer George Braun, in collaboration with the engraver Frans Hogenberg. Produced between 1572 and 1617, this map is considered the most accurate world map of its time, surpassing the work of its predecessor, the "Atlas Minor" by Abraham Ortelius. This particular print, housed in the Salamanca University Library in Spain, is the first volume of the map series, focusing on Europe. The map is an intricate etching, showcasing the meticulous attention to detail that characterized Braun and Hogenberg's work. The map is presented in a horizontal format, with the Iberian Peninsula taking center stage, including Spain and Portugal. The map depicts various cities, towns, and geographical features, including the major rivers such as the Seine and the Canal, which are highlighted with a winding, blue line. The map also includes illustrations of people and animals, adding a sense of vibrancy and life to the landscape. The print is bathed in natural daylight, revealing the intricate details of the etchings. The sunlight casts a warm glow over the map, bringing out the rich colors and textures. The daytime setting adds a sense of tranquility and serenity, inviting the viewer to explore the vast expanse of the world as it was known during that time. The map's historical significance lies in its accuracy and detail, which made it a valuable resource for explorers, merchants, and scholars during the Age of Discovery. Its inclusion in the Salamanca University Library's collection is a testament to the institution's commitment to preserving and promoting knowledge and discovery.
