1840 Administrator Jules

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Jules Claretie, the renowned French writer and theatre administrator, in the year 1913. Born in Paris on May 1, 1840, Claretie was a prolific figure in French literature and theatre history. He began his literary career as a journalist, writing for various publications, before turning to fiction and drama. Claretie's literary works were diverse, ranging from novels and short stories to plays and essays. He was known for his wit, satire, and social commentary, often reflecting the political and social issues of his time. One of his most famous novels, "La Ville morte" (The Dead City), published in 1882, was a scathing critique of the French colonial regime in Algeria. In addition to his writing, Claretie was also a prominent figure in the French theatre scene. He served as the director of the Théâtre Libre from 1887 to 1890, where he produced plays by contemporary writers such as Edmond Rostand and Maurice Barrès. He was also a close friend and collaborator of the famous actor Sarah Bernhardt, with whom he wrote several plays. This photograph of Claretie, taken in 1913, captures him in the prime of his later years. He is seen here with a serious expression, dressed in a formal suit and wearing a bow tie. The photograph is a testament to his enduring legacy as a writer and theatre administrator, whose contributions to French literature and theatre continue to be celebrated to this day. The photograph is a valuable historical document, offering a glimpse into the life of a man who played a significant role in shaping the cultural landscape of France in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is a reminder of the rich literary and theatrical heritage that France has bequeathed to the world.
