EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the iconic Coliseum Theatre in Charing Cross, London, during the run of Lew Leslie's groundbreaking production of 'Blackbirds' in 1935. Leslie, an American Broadway writer and producer, began his career in show business in vaudeville in his early twenties and went on to become the first major impresario to present African-American artists on the Broadway stage. Known for his innovative stage shows at the Cotton Club, Leslie later gained fame for his Blackbirds revues, which brought together an ensemble of talented African-American performers. The Blackbirds of 1935 marked the first time these revues were brought over for a run in the UK, and the Coliseum Theatre in London's West End played host to this historic event. The theatre's grand façade, adorned with ornate columns and intricate detailing, stands proudly against the backdrop of a bustling London street scene. The marquee above the entrance proudly announces the title of the production, drawing in the crowds. Leslie's productions were known for their dazzling spectacles, showcasing a diverse range of acts including singing, dancing, and comedy. The Blackbirds revues were a celebration of African-American culture and talent, and their influence can be seen in the many groundbreaking artists who went on to find success in the entertainment industry. This photograph is a testament to the power of the arts to bring people together and challenge societal norms, making it an important piece of both London and Broadway history.
