The Column of Constantine or Burnt Column, Istanbul

The Column of Constantine (or Burnt Column ) is a monumental column constructed on the orders of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great in 330 AD. It commemorates the declaration of Byzantium (renamed by Constantine as Nova Roma) as the new capital city of the Roman Empire. The column is located on Yeni祲 iler Caddesi in Cenberlitas, central Istanbul, along the old Divan Yolu (the Road to the Imperial Council ) between Sultanahmet and Beyaz are (known as Forum Tauri in the Roman period.). Earthquakes and a fire in 1779 destroyed the neighborhood surrounding the column, leaving it with black scorch marks and earning it the name Burnt Column. The column was restored by Abd d I, who had the present masonry base added. The base was strengthened in 1779. The original platform of the column is 2.5 meters below ground. Date: circa 1910s

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Column of Constantine, also known as the Burnt Column, stands proudly in central Istanbul as a testament to the rich history of the city. This monumental column was erected by the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great in 330 AD to commemorate the declaration of Byzantium as the new capital city of the Roman Empire, which was then renamed Nova Roma. The column is located on Yeniçeriler Caddesi in Cenberlitas, along the old Divan Yolu, between Sultanahmet and Beyazıtare, a significant road leading to the Imperial Council. The column, which once stood tall and unscathed, was left with black scorch marks following earthquakes and a fire that devastated the surrounding neighborhood in 1779. These events earned it the name Burnt Column. The Ottoman Sultan Abdülhamid I undertook the restoration of the column, adding the present masonry base. The original platform of the column is now 2.5 meters below ground. The Column of Constantine is a significant historical landmark in Istanbul, showcasing the city's Roman past. As you stroll down the bustling streets of this vibrant city, take a moment to appreciate the enduring legacy of this ancient monument. The column, with its rich history and intriguing story, continues to captivate visitors from around the world.
