EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts two intriguing birds of the Old World, the Common Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) and the Crested Coua (Coua cristata). The Common Cuckoo, also known as the European Cuckoo, is a well-known brood parasite, laying its eggs in the nests of other birds, allowing the cuckoo chick to be raised by the unsuspecting foster parents. The Crested Coua, on the other hand, is a native of Madagascar and is known for its distinctive crest and bright plumage. The illustration is taken from the "Dictionnaire de Naturalisie: Ornithologie" (Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology) by Frederic Cuvier, published in Paris between 1816 and 1830. The work was a collaborative effort, with Jean Gabriel Pretre serving as the painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The engraving was produced by Guyard, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this illustration are a testament to the skill and artistry of the time. The Common Cuckoo is shown perched on a branch, its distinctive black and white plumage contrasting with the lush greenery of the forest. The Crested Coua is depicted in its natural habitat, standing proudly on a branch with its crest raised, displaying its bright red eyes and distinctive black and white barring. This beautiful piece of historical artwork not only showcases the natural beauty of these two birds but also provides a glimpse into the scientific exploration and documentation of the natural world during the early 19th century.
