This print showcases Comte de Staeling, Jean-Baptiste Charles Henri-Hector (1729-1794), a renowned French naval commander who played a significant role in European military history. Born on October 2, 1729, in Rennes, Brittany, Staeling entered the French Navy in 1742, at the age of 13, and quickly rose through the ranks due to his exceptional leadership and tactical skills. During the Seven Years' War, Staeling gained fame for his victory at the Battle of Quiberon Bay in 1759. His fleet managed to repel the British attempt to invade France, saving the country from potential disaster. Staeling's military prowess continued to be demonstrated throughout the American Revolutionary War, where he commanded the French fleet that supported the American colonists against the British. Despite his successes, Staeling faced numerous challenges and setbacks. In 1782, during the War of the Bavarian Succession, he suffered a devastating defeat at the Battle of the Saintes, which marked the end of French naval dominance in the Atlantic. Staeling's career ended in disappointment when he was arrested and imprisoned during the French Revolution. He died in obscurity on February 16, 1794.
