1805 1815 Bartolomeo Basis Bergami Brunswick Caroline Companion Count Courier Proved Relationship Scandalous Trial

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative portrait, Count Bartolomeo Bergami (circa 1775-1845) cuts an intriguing figure, his intense gaze fixed on an unseen horizon. Born in Italy, Bergami rose to prominence as a courier and companion to the controversial figure of Caroline of Brunswick (1768-1821), the estranged wife of the future King George IV of England. Their scandalous relationship, which began in the late 1790s and continued intermittently until the early 1810s, was the basis for Caroline's infamous trial in 1820. Caroline's marriage to the future king had been a unhappy one, marked by mutual infidelity and bitter recriminations. When she gave birth to a son out of wedlock in 1794, the royal family demanded that she be sent back to Germany. Caroline, however, refused to be banished and instead lived openly with her lover, the dashing Count Bergami. Their relationship was the subject of much gossip and scandal, and the British public was fascinated by the pair's defiance of societal norms. Despite the widespread rumors of Caroline and Bergami's liaison, no concrete evidence was ever produced to prove their guilt. The trial of 1820, which aimed to strip Caroline of her title and estates, ultimately failed due to a lack of solid evidence. The Count himself was never implicated in any legal proceedings. This portrait of Count Bergami, likely taken between 1805 and 1815, offers a tantalizing glimpse into the enigmatic figure who played a pivotal role in one of the most sensational scandals of Regency-era England. With his elegant attire and piercing gaze, Bergami exudes an air of mystery and intrigue that continues to captivate historians and the public alike.
