1851 Admission Chambre Closed Coup Deputes Deputies Expelled Loyal Members Napoleon Napoleons Refused December

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic print depicts a pivotal moment in French political history: the expulsion of the deputies from the Chambre des Députés, or Chamber of Deputies, during Napoléon III's coup d'état in December 1851. The image captures the tense atmosphere as troops loyal to Napoléon III bar the entrance to the chamber, refusing admission to the assembled deputies. The closure of the chamber marked the end of the Second French Republic and the beginning of Napoléon III's authoritarian rule, which would last until 1870. The Chambre des Députés was the French parliament's lower house at the time, and its members represented the various regions of France. They had been elected in 1848, following the revolution that overthrew the monarchy and established the Second Republic. However, Napoléon III, who had been elected president in 1848, grew increasingly frustrated with the chamber's opposition to his policies. In December 1851, he staged a coup d'état, suspending the constitution and dissolving the chamber. This print offers a glimpse into the dramatic events of that day. The soldiers, dressed in uniforms and bearing weapons, stand resolutely at the entrance to the chamber, preventing the deputies from entering. The deputies, dressed in their formal attire, are shown gathered outside, looking on in disbelief and anger. The closed doors of the chamber loom in the background, symbolizing the end of representative government in France for the time being. This print is a powerful reminder of the political upheavals that have shaped French history. It offers a unique perspective on a pivotal moment in the country's past, and serves as a reminder of the importance of democratic institutions and the dangers of authoritarian rule.
