The Court-Martial of Lieut. Perry of H. Majesty?s 46th Regiment, in the Mess Room at Windsor Barracks, August 1854.Coloured lithograph after artist unknown, published by Read and Co, London, 9 Sep 1854.The hierarchical and socially exclusive nature of the early Victorian officer corps was thrown into sharp relief by the court martial of Lieutenant James Edward Perry of the 46th (The South Devonshire) Regiment. The son of a tradesman, Perry had been subject to severe bullying until, losing all restraint, he attacked Lieutenant Thomas Greer with a silver candlestick. Both officers were eventually required to sell their commissions and leave the Army but the proceedings of the court martial exposed the unsavoury atmosphere in at least one officers? mess and generated much adverse publicity. Date: 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: The Court-Martial of Lieut. Perry of H.M. 46th Regiment: Unraveling the Hierarchical and Exclusive Nature of the Early Victorian Officer Corps This image depicts a pivotal moment in the military history of the early Victorian era: the court-martial of Lieutenant James Edward Perry of H.M. 46th Regiment (The South Devonshire Regiment), which took place in the Mess Room at Windsor Barracks in August 1854. The court-martial exposed the unsavory atmosphere within at least one officers' mess and generated significant adverse publicity. The hierarchical and socially exclusive nature of the early Victorian officer corps is vividly illustrated in this scene. The court-martial of Lieutenant Perry, a man who rose from humble beginnings as the son of a tradesman, shed light on the harsh realities faced by those who did not conform to the rigid social norms of the military elite. Perry's plight began when he was subjected to severe bullying by his fellow officers, eventually leading him to lose all restraint and attack Lieutenant Thomas Greer with a silver candlestick. Both officers were ultimately forced to sell their commissions and leave the Army as a result of the proceedings. This coloured lithograph, published by Read and Co in London on September 9, 1854, offers a fascinating glimpse into the inner workings of the military establishment during this period. The artist remains unknown, but their work captures the tension and drama of the court-martial proceedings with remarkable detail. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the complex social dynamics that shaped the lives of military officers during the early Victorian era.
