This exquisite detail is taken from the fifth leaf of the Catalan Atlas, a magnificent illuminated manuscript created between 1375 and 1385 in Catalonia, Spain. The leaf depicts a section of the map of Delli, which focuses on the Silk Road, an ancient trade route connecting Europe and Asia. The intricate miniature painting captures a scene of a camel caravan making its way across the formidable mountains of Tian Shan. The caravan, led by two turbaned figures identified as Jafuda Cresques and his son Abraham Cresques, is making its perilous journey from the west to the east, carrying valuable goods that would be highly sought after in the markets of Catai.
