1850s 1855 Action Attack Cassell Conflict Crimean Horseback Kars Russians

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the intensity and chaos of the Russian attack on the town of Kars during the Crimean War on September 29, 1855. The Crimean War, which lasted from 1853 to 1856, was a major European conflict between Russia and an alliance of the Ottoman Empire, France, Britain, and Sardinia. The battle for Kars was a significant engagement in the Eastern Theatre of the war, with the Russian forces attempting to seize control of the strategic town located in present-day Turkey. In this print from the Illustrated London News, published in November 1855 by Cassell and Company, we see the Russian troops charging forward on horseback, their horses rearing and snorting with the excitement and energy of the impending battle. The men, dressed in their military uniforms and brandishing weapons, are focused and determined, their expressions reflecting the seriousness of the situation. Smoke rises from the town in the background, indicating the intensity of the fighting. The attack on Kars was ultimately successful for the Russians, who were able to capture the town and its fortifications. However, the Crimean War as a whole ended in a stalemate, with no clear victor emerging. This print serves as a powerful reminder of the courage and sacrifice of the soldiers involved in this complex and pivotal conflict in European history.
