EDITORS COMMENTS
Cromwell Gardens: A WWI Soldier's Home and the Long Ascent to Duty This evocative photograph captures the tranquil beauty of Cromwell Gardens in London, a scene that once served as a temporary residence for ten soldiers during World War I. Among them was 21017 Private P.J. Hill of D Company, 20th Battalion, The County of London Regiment. Private Hill, who studied at the prestigious Lambeth School of Art located at St. Oswalds Place, Upper Kennington Lane, found himself residing at 6 Amott Road, Peckham Rye, in 1895, far removed from the impending conflict that would soon engulf Europe. The idyllic gardens, with their lush greenery and serene pond, stood in stark contrast to the harsh realities of military life that awaited him. The image reveals a steep staircase of 112 steps leading up to the soldiers' quarters, a daunting climb that would have been a daily challenge for these men in uniform. The weight of their equipment, the fatigue from long hours of training, and the anticipation of the battlefield would have made each ascent a formidable task. As part of the 1st Great Military Regiments, Private Hill and his comrades would soon embark on a historical journey that would test their courage, resilience, and commitment. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the human stories behind the larger historical narrative of World War I, offering a glimpse into the lives of these soldiers and their temporary home in Cromwell Gardens.
