EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is a print from the atlas "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" published in the 16th century by the collaborative efforts of Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg. The print depicts the city of Cusco, or Cuzco, in Peru, which had recently been conquered by the Spanish around 1534. The title "Cusco (Peru)" is inscribed at the top of the print, with the subtitle "View of the city and its environs in 1576." The scene unfolds with a bird's eye view of the city, nestled in a valley surrounded by lush greenery and snow-capped mountains. The urban landscape is a fascinating blend of Inca and Spanish architectural influences. In the foreground, we see a group of indigenous figures, dressed in traditional attire, engaged in various activities. One figure, identified as a "cacique" or local ruler, is depicted wearing a grand, feathered headdress and holding a staff. In the background, we can make out the imposing structure of the Plaza de Armas, the central square of Cusco, which was the heart of Spanish colonial administration. The Spanish influence is also evident in the presence of a grand, European-style litter, which is being transported through the streets. The print offers a unique glimpse into the life of the citizens of Cusco during the transition from Inca to Spanish rule. The Latin inscription at the bottom of the print, "Orbis Terrarum Civitates," translates to "Cities of the World," reflecting the global reach of European exploration and cartography during the modern age. This stunning print is a testament to the rich cultural history of Cusco and the broader Peruvian civilization.
