The King, who had been leading the Third Crusade against the Muslim forces in the Holy Land, was engaged in a minor skirmish when he was unexpectedly struck by an arrow, believed to have been fired by the Norman archer, Bertrand de Guesblanche. Richard I, renowned for his bravery and leadership, was a formidable figure on the battlefield and had earned the nickname 'Lionheart' for his fearlessness in combat.
