EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the memory of Albert Auerbach (1894-1918), a brave young soldier who served with the 1st/3rd Battalion of the London Regiment, also known as the Royal Fusiliers, during the First World War. Albert's uniform is adorned with various decorations and badges, each telling a story of his wartime service and valor. The most prominent badge on his left chest is the Military Cross (MC), awarded for gallantry in the face of the enemy. The cross is accompanied by the Royal Fusiliers' distinctive red triangle, symbolizing the regiment's long and proud history. The triangular insignia is repeated on his right shoulder, along with the 3rd Battalion's marking and the 29th Division's marking in the form of stripes. The star and bar on Albert's left chest represent the 1914 and 1915 Star Medals, which were awarded to those who served in the British military forces during the First World War before the end of 1915. The stripe on his right sleeve indicates that he held the rank of Lance-Corporal. Albert tragically lost his life in action on 1 September 1918, during the Battle of Bouchavesnes in the Somme region of northern France. The decorations and badges on his uniform serve as a poignant reminder of his dedication and sacrifice during the Great War of the 1910s.
