EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 399 from John James Audubon's iconic work, "Birds of America," showcases three exquisitely detailed bird species: the MacGillivray's Warbler (Oporornis tolmiei), Blackburnian Warbler (Dendroica fusca), and the Yellow-throated Vireo (Dendroica virens). This stunning hand-coloured aquatint print, created between 1835 and 1838, was engraved, printed, and coloured by R. Havell (& Son) in London. The image captures these passerine birds in their natural habitat, perched gracefully on branches. The MacGillivray's Warbler, with its long, green bib, is depicted on the left, while the Blackburnian Warbler, characterized by its distinctive black bib and yellow throat, is shown in the middle. The Yellow-throated Vireo, a member of the parulidae family, is illustrated on the right, its vibrant yellow throat contrasting with its olive-green back. The sauropsida aves, or reptile-descended birds, are presented in meticulous detail, with each feather and contour rendered with exceptional accuracy. The intricate aquatint technique used in the print allows for a rich, textured effect, bringing the birds to life in a way that was unprecedented at the time. Audubon's "Birds of America" is considered a seminal work in the history of ornithology and natural history illustration. This plate, in particular, is a testament to the artist's dedication to capturing the beauty and diversity of the avian world. The birds are depicted with a sense of life and movement, inviting the viewer to appreciate their unique characteristics and intricacies.
