EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph depicts an intriguing assemblage of woodwind instruments: two double flageolets, a German flute, and two flutes douces. The image is an illustration from "A.J. Hipkins Musical Instruments, Historic, Rare and Unique," published by Adam and Charles Black in Edinburgh in 1888. Alfred James Hipkins (1826-1903), an English musicologist, was the author of this comprehensive work, which focused on the history of various musical instruments. The double flageolets at the center of the image are intricately designed, with their distinctive curved shape and multiple finger holes. These instruments, which produce high-pitched notes, were popular in the Baroque and Classical periods. The German flute, to the left, is a versatile woodwind instrument with a conical bore and a distinctive key system. Its rich, mellow sound was favored by composers such as Mozart and Bach. To the right, two flutes douces, or "sweet flutes," are depicted. These instruments, which lack keys and rely on finger holes covered with felt pads, produce a soft, muted sound. They were used primarily for special musical effects and were often used in combination with other instruments. This illustration, created by William Gibb, provides a fascinating glimpse into the diverse world of historical woodwind instruments. The vibrant colors and intricate details of the chromolithograph bring these instruments to life, offering a visual feast for the eyes as well as an educational resource for musicians and music historians.
