EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures Dr. Marie Stopes (1880-1958) in her court dress, proudly presenting herself before King George V and Queen Mary in 1924. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Dr. Stopes received her education at University College London and became the first female science lecturer at Manchester University. Following the annulment of her first marriage, she turned her attention towards the lack of understanding about sex within marriage and published her groundbreaking book, "Married Love," in 1918. In the same year, she married Humphrey Roe, an aircraft manufacturer, and together they opened the first British contraception clinic in London. Dr. Stopes' pioneering work in the field of family planning and women's reproductive rights made her a controversial figure in British society at the time. Her unwavering commitment to improving access to birth control and promoting open discussions about sexual health led to the establishment of the Marie Stopes International organization, which continues to provide essential reproductive healthcare services to millions of people around the world today. This portrait offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman who defied societal norms and made significant strides in advancing women's rights and sexual health education. Dr. Stopes' legacy continues to inspire and influence generations of advocates for reproductive justice and gender equality.
