EDITORS COMMENTS
Dr Syn: A Tale of the South Coast," a captivating theatrical production based on Russell Thorndike's novel, came to life under the artistic vision of Ivan Firth and Charles Buchel in 1927. This evocative photograph captures the eerie and spooky atmosphere of the play as it toured to the Grand Theatre in Swansea on 31st March of that year. Thorndike, an accomplished actor and the play's leading man, is depicted here in silhouette atop a galloping horse against the backdrop of a moody night sky. The moon casts an ethereal glow over the scene, its rays piercing through the cloudy expanse and illuminating the silhouettes of other riders in the distance. The pointed hats of the smugglers, reminiscent of witches' hats, add to the otherworldly ambiance. Ivan Firth, the production's designer, expertly brought Thorndike's story of smugglers on the South coast during the eighteenth century to the stage. Firth's collaboration with Thorndike extended beyond design, as the actor also starred in the play. The haunting image of Dr Syn and his band of horseback riders, captured by Charles Buchel, perfectly encapsulates the eerie and mysterious essence of this theatrical masterpiece. The play, first produced at Wyndhams Theatre on 11th October 1925, was a testament to the creative partnership between Thorndike, Firth, and Buchel. Their collective vision brought to life a tale that continues to captivate audiences to this day, leaving us with a sense of wonder and excitement in the face of the unknown. This photograph, with its hauntingly beautiful imagery, serves as a reminder of the power of storytelling and the enduring allure of the theatre. The silhouettes of the riders, the ominous clouds, and the haunting lighting all come together to create an image that is as timeless as the stories it represents.
