EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures a moment in time during the early years of the 20th century, featuring the Duchess of Norfolk, Gwendolen Mary Fitzalan-Howard (1877-1945), with her four children: Bernard Marmaduke Fitzalan-Howard, 16th Duke of Norfolk (b. 1904), Lady Mary Fitzalan-Howard (b. 1905), Lady Katherine Mary Fitzalan-Howard (b. 1912), and Lady Winifride Alice Fitzalan-Howard (b. 1914). The Duchess, who was 30 years younger than her husband, the 15th Duke of Norfolk, is seen cradling her youngest child, Winifride, while her eldest son, Bernard, stands proudly by her side. The other two children, Mary and Katherine, sit on the floor, playing with toys. The Duchess, the daughter of the 11th Lord Herries of Terregles and his wife, Angela Fitzalan-Howard, married the Duke in 1904. Tragically, the Duke passed away in 1917, leaving the Duchess a young widow with four young children to raise. This portrait, taken in 1917, captures the strength and resilience of the Duchess in the face of adversity. The Fitzalan-Howard family is one of the oldest and most distinguished families in the British peerage, with a history dating back to the 13th century. The family's lineage and titles are rich in history and tradition, making this portrait a valuable addition to any collection of aristocratic portraits.
