EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant portrait captured in 1910, The Duchess of Roxburghe, nee Mary Goelet, exudes the refined grace and opulence of the Edwardian era. Daughter of the renowned American millionaire Ogden Goelet, Mary was a prime example of the "dollar princesses" - wealthy American heiresses who married impoverished British peers in exchange for substantial dowries and the coveted title of a duchess or lady. The Duchess's marriage to the 8th Duke of Roxburghe took place on November 10, 1903, at St. Thomas Church in New York. The event was one of the most notable social occasions of the season, with extravagant wedding presents reportedly worth over 200,000. Mary's stunning appearance in this photograph reflects the height of Edwardian fashion, with her elegant gown, intricate lace veil, and exquisite jewels. Her poised demeanor and captivating gaze convey the confidence and allure of a woman who has just secured her place in the aristocracy. The Duchess of Roxburghe's marriage marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life, one filled with the grandeur and tradition of the British aristocracy. This portrait serves as a reminder of a bygone era, where wealth and titles held immense power and influence, and the allure of love and status transcended borders.
