EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning wedding portrait captures the radiant moment when Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich of Russia (1857-1905) and Princess Elizabeth of Hesse and by Rhine (1864-1918), later known as Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna of Russia, exchanged their vows on June 15, 1884, in St. Petersburg, Russia. The bride, dressed in a beautiful white gown with a long train and a diamond diadem, gazes lovingly at her new husband, who wears the uniform of a Russian general. The couple's union marked the beginning of a lifelong partnership and a significant chapter in Russian and European royal history. Born in Darmstadt, Grand Duchess Elizabeth was the eldest daughter of Grand Duke Louis IV of Hesse and by Rhine and Princess Alice of the United Kingdom. She was known for her piety, charitable work, and dedication to the Russian Orthodox faith. Grand Duke Sergei, the fifth son of Emperor Alexander II of Russia, was a decorated military officer and a prominent figure in Russian politics. Their marriage was a grand affair, attended by members of the Russian and European royal families, as well as high-ranking officials and diplomats. The couple's happiness was short-lived, however, as they faced numerous challenges and tragedies throughout their marriage, including the loss of their only son in infancy and the assassination of Sergei in 1905. Despite the hardships, Grand Duchess Elizabeth remained devoted to her husband and to Russia, and continued her charitable work, earning the respect and admiration of the Russian people. She was canonized as a saint in the Russian Orthodox Church in 1992, and is remembered for her faith, compassion, and selflessness.
