EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1798, showcases an intriguing assembly of five species of Old World deer. The central figure is the Eastern Roe Deer (Capreolus pygargus, number 1), with its distinctive white spots on the sides of its body and a small, elongated ear. To its left, the Spotted Deer or Chital (Cervus axis, number 2) is depicted with large, prominent spots covering its body and antlers adorned with numerous tines. Number 3 represents the Hog Deer (Cervus porcinus), which is smaller in size and has a reddish-brown coat with white spots, particularly noticeable on its flanks. The Muntjac Deer or Barking Deer (Muntiacus muntjak, number 4) is shown on the right side of the image, characterized by its small size, dark coat, and distinctive white markings on its face. The stag (Capreolus capreolus, number 5) and doe (number 6) of the Roe Deer are also present in the image. The Roe Deer is native to Europe and is smaller than most other deer species, with a reddish-brown coat and a white rump. The stag's antlers are typically smaller and more slender than those of other deer species. This beautiful illustration serves as a testament to the rich zoological knowledge of the late 18th century and provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of these majestic creatures. The meticulous handcoloring and intricate copperplate engraving techniques employed by the artist further enhance the image's allure, making it a valuable addition to any collection of historical illustrations.
