Lieutenant Colonel Edgar R. Mobbs, D.S.O. Edgar Roberts Mobbs DSO (1882 - 1917) was an English rugby union footballer who played for and captained Northampton R.F.C. and England. He played as a three quarter. EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the determined and resolute gaze of Lieutenant Colonel Edgar R. Mobbs, D.S.O. (1882-1917), an esteemed English rugby union footballer who played for and captained Northampton R.F.C. and England as a three-quarter. After initially being deemed too old to join the army during World War 1, Mobbs' unwavering spirit led him to raise his own "sportsmen's" battalion, Mobbs Own, for the Northamptonshire regiment. He rose through the ranks to command his battalion, leading his men into battle with courage and dedication. Tragically, Mobbs was killed in action during the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele) in July 1917, while attempting to capture a machine gun post at Zillebeke. Despite extensive search efforts, his body was never found, and his name is immortalized on the Menin Gate memorial. In honor of his legacy, the first Mobbs Memorial Match was held in 1921 between the East Midlands and the Barbarians at Franklin Gardens, and the tradition has continued ever since. This poignant image serves as a poignant reminder of the indomitable spirit of Mobbs and the many other brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during the First World War.
