Edwards' portraits were often commissioned by members of the British nobility and gentry, including the Duke of Devonshire, the Earl of Derby, and the Earl of Burlington. Despite his success, Edwards' personal life was marked by tragedy and hardship. He was married twice, and both wives died young, leaving him to raise their children on his own. Edwards' later years were also marred by financial difficulties, which forced him to sell many of his works to pay off debts. Despite these challenges, Edwards continued to paint until his death in 1806.
