EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Edward George Hemmerde (1871-1948), an Englishman of remarkable versatility and accomplishment. Born in 1871, Hemmerde's early life was marked by his prowess as a rower, a sport at which he excelled. His athletic achievements, however, were only the beginning of an extraordinary career. Hemmerde went on to study law and became a barrister, adding the title of 'Esquire' to his name. His legal expertise and intellectual abilities soon led him into the world of politics, where he served as a Liberal Party Member of Parliament for East Denbighshire from 1912 to 1918. After a brief hiatus, Hemmerde joined the Labour Party and represented Crewe from 1922 to 1924. Despite his political commitments, Hemmerde's creative side did not go unnoticed. He was an accomplished playwright, penning works for both the stage and screen. His plays often reflected his political beliefs and provided insight into the social issues of the time. This photograph, taken by Vanity Fair, captures Hemmerde in a thoughtful pose, his right hand clenched in a fist, as if in contemplation. The image serves as a reminder of Hemmerde's multifaceted personality and his significant contributions to English society as a sportsman, barrister, playwright, and politician. Hemmerde's life story is a testament to the power of determination, versatility, and the pursuit of knowledge and creativity.
