1729 1806 Lawyer Shippen

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Edward Shippen (1729-1806), an esteemed American lawyer who left an indelible mark on the legal landscape of colonial America. Born in Philadelphia, Shippen studied law under the tutelage of his uncle, Andrew Hamilton, who was a renowned lawyer and statesman in his own right. Shippen's legal career began in earnest in 1753 when he was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar. Throughout his illustrious career, Shippen gained a reputation as a brilliant and tenacious advocate. He represented numerous high-profile clients, including the Pennsylvania Assembly and the Proprietors of Pennsylvania. Shippen's most notable case came in 1765 when he successfully argued for the rights of the colonists against the Stamp Act, a British tax law that was widely unpopular in America. His eloquent and persuasive argument helped to galvanize the colonial resistance to British rule. Shippen's commitment to the cause of American independence did not go unnoticed. In 1775, he was appointed as the Attorney General of Pennsylvania, a position he held until 1791. During this time, he played a crucial role in drafting the Pennsylvania Constitution and was instrumental in the drafting of the United States Constitution. This print, created in the late 18th or early 19th century, captures the essence of Shippen's distinguished career. The image shows him in the prime of his life, dressed in the formal attire of a colonial lawyer. His stern expression and piercing gaze convey a sense of determination and intelligence. The intricate details of the print, from the folds of his coat to the textured background, transport us back to a time when the future of a nation hung in the balance, and men like Edward Shippen fought tirelessly to shape its destiny.
