EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken circa 1903, showcases the awe-inspiring Colossi of Memnon in Egypt. The Colossi, located in Theban Necropolis near Luxor, are two massive stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, each standing approximately 18 meters high. The statues represent Amenhotep seated on his throne, with one hand resting on his knee and the other holding an offering table. The Colossi of Memnon were originally part of a larger memorial temple complex dedicated to Amenhotep III and his queen, Tiy. The statues are believed to have been carved around 1350 BCE. One of the most intriguing features of the Colossi is the mysterious "lucky leaf" or "Medallion of Memnon," a small piece of limestone that would fall from the statue's left ear every morning at sunrise, creating a sound similar to a dripping water or a gong being struck. This phenomenon, which occurred from the 12th century CE until the 19th century, was believed by the ancient Egyptians to be a sign of the god's approval. The photograph's intricate details reveal the intricacies of the statues' design, from the intricately carved facial features to the intricate patterns of the Pharaoh's headdress. The image also highlights the statues' impressive size, which leaves one feeling insignificant in the presence of such ancient history. The Colossi of Memnon continue to be a popular tourist destination and a testament to the rich history and cultural significance of ancient Egypt.
