EDITORS COMMENTS
La Belle Hamilton: Elisabeth Hamilton, Countess of Gramont (1641-1708) was a woman of remarkable beauty and charm, known as "La Belle Hamilton" in her native Scotland. Born Elisabeth Hamilton, she was the daughter of the 1st Lord Hamilton of Preston and married Philibert, Comte de Gramont, a French nobleman, in 1665. The couple's union was celebrated for its grandeur, with reports of a lavish wedding that rivaled those of the French court. This stunning oval portrait, painted around 1665, captures Elisabeth in the prime of her youth. She is depicted wearing an elegant low-neckline dress adorned with intricate lace and pearls. Her long, curly locks cascade down her shoulders, framing her delicate features and accentuating her piercing blue eyes. A single earring dangles from her ear, adding a touch of elegance to the ensemble. Elisabeth's beauty was legendary, and her charm and wit were said to have captivated many. She was known for her intelligence and her ability to navigate the complex political landscape of the time. Her marriage to Philibert, who was a French diplomat, gave her access to the highest echelons of European society, and she became a patron of the arts and a prominent figure in the French court. Despite her many accomplishments, Elisabeth's life was not without tragedy. Her husband was killed in a duel in 1672, leaving her a widow at the young age of 31. She continued to serve as a diplomat and advisor to her son, who became the Duke of Gramont, until her death in 1708. This portrait of Elisabeth Hamilton, Countess of Gramont, offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman who defied the conventions of her time and left an indelible mark on history.
