1641 1708 Belle Comte Countess Curls Earring Elisabeth Grammont Hamilton Neckline Philibert

EDITORS COMMENTS
Elisabeth Hamilton, Countess of Gramont, also known as "La Belle Hamilton," was a captivating figure of the 17th century. Born in Scotland around 1641, she later married Philibert, Comte de Gramont, a French nobleman, in 1664. This stunning portrait, dated around 1665, showcases Elisabeth's allure and elegance. Elisabeth's low-cut neckline reveals a hint of her décolletage, a fashion trend popular during the Baroque period. Her voluminous curls cascade down her shoulders, framing her beautiful face. The intricate lace collar adds a touch of opulence to the portrait, reflecting her noble status. Elisabeth's earring, a simple pearl drop, complements her delicate features and enhances the overall elegance of the portrait. Her piercing gaze and confident expression convey a sense of intelligence and strength, making her a captivating subject. Elisabeth Hamilton's life was marked by tragedy and intrigue. She was the daughter of the 2nd Earl of Hamilton and was married off to Philibert, Comte de Gramont, as part of a political alliance between Scotland and France. Their marriage produced five children, but Philibert was killed in a duel in 1675, leaving Elisabeth a widow at the young age of 34. She later married the Duke of Bouillon, but the marriage was short-lived as he died just a few years later. Elisabeth passed away in 1708, leaving behind a legacy as a beautiful and resilient woman of the 17th century.
