Elsie Janis working on the land, WWI

American actress, Elsie Janis posing for a picture looking very fetching in a land workers outfit during the First World War. Elsie Janis (March 16, 1889 February 26, 1956) was an American singer, songwriter, actress, and screenwriter. Entertaining the troops during World War I immortalized her as " the sweetheart of the AEF" (American Expeditionary Force). The photograph bears a striking resemblance to picture number 10472401 - a drawing of a land girl on a postcard by amateur soldier artist George Ranstead. It seems likely that Ranstead saw and copied this photograph of Janis. Date: 1917

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of American actress Elsie Janis as she toils on the land during World War I. Dressed in the attire of a dedicated land worker, Janis poses confidently with a spade in hand, her determined expression reflecting the collective effort and resilience of women during this pivotal period in history. Born on March 16, 1889, Elsie Janis was an accomplished singer, songwriter, actress, and screenwriter. Her captivating performances during the war earned her the endearing title of "the sweetheart of the AEF" (American Expeditionary Force). This photograph, dating back to 1917, bears a striking resemblance to a drawing of a land girl by amateur soldier artist George Ranstead (picture number 10472401). It is highly plausible that Ranstead was inspired by this very image of Janis. The photograph encapsulates the spirit of the times, as women from all walks of life stepped up to contribute to the war effort in myriad ways. The image of Elsie Janis, a celebrated entertainer, embracing the role of a land worker, serves as a testament to the indomitable spirit and adaptability of the women who played their part in the Great War. As we honor the legacy of these brave and resourceful women, this photograph stands as a poignant reminder of their unwavering commitment and the significant impact they had on the course of history.
