EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 19th century print depicts Embrio squali pristis, also known as the Sawfish or Carpenter Shark (Pristis pectinatus), from the seminal work "Naturgeschichte der ausländischen Fische" (Natural History of Foreign Fishes) by Marcus Elieser Bloch. Published between 1785 and 1795, this comprehensive work features over sixty copperplate engravings of various exotic fish species, meticulously rendered from original specimens. The Sawfish, a unique member of the Batoidea class within the Chondrichthyes phylum and the Elasmobranchii subclass, is easily recognizable by its long, toothed rostrum, which resembles a saw. This distinctive feature is used to locate and stun prey, which is then swallowed whole. The Sawfish is also known as the Carpenter Shark due to its ability to excavate the seabed with its rostrum, creating channels and feeding on the invertebrates that inhabit the disturbed area. Bloch's illustration of the Sawfish is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and scientific accuracy that characterized his work. The intricately rendered gills, fins, and scales are all faithfully represented, providing a glimpse into the anatomy of this fascinating and enigmatic species. The print also includes a detailed label, which provides essential information about the Sawfish's taxonomy, habitat, and behavior. This historic print offers a unique window into the natural world of the past, showcasing the beauty and diversity of the Sawfish and other exotic fish species that captivated the curiosity of naturalists and collectors during the Age of Discovery. Today, the Sawfish remains an iconic and intriguing species, with populations facing numerous threats, including habitat destruction, accidental capture in fishing gear, and climate change. The preservation of historic records like this one is essential for understanding the natural history of this remarkable animal and informing efforts to protect it for future generations.
