This print, drawn by the renowned American naturalist William Bartram in the late 18th century, showcases a vibrant collection of American flora and fauna. At the center of the image, the Acadian Flycatcher (Empidonax virescens) perches gracefully on a branch, its green and yellow plumage a striking contrast against the lush foliage. To its right, the Elliottia racemosa, or buffalo-nut tree, dominates the scene with its large, white flowers and glossy, green leaves. Nestled among the foliage, the Poppy Mallow (Callirhoe triangulata) displays its delicate pink blooms, adding a burst of color to the otherwise verdant landscape. The American Pipit (Anthus rubescens), a small, brown bird with a distinctive buffy belly, can be seen foraging on the ground at the base of the Elliottia. Bartram's intricate and detailed drawings, held in the Botany Library at the Natural History Museum in London, are a testament to his exceptional observational skills and his deep appreciation for the natural world.
